More = Less

The guy on the bass is Planetshaker’s bassist Mark Peric and if you are wondering, yes the guy doing nothing on the swivel chair is Planetshaker’s iconic lead singer and worship leader Henry Seeley.

I was pretty impressed by this guy’s playing when I chanced upon this video when a thought, or rather an observation hit me. Most of us do know the kind of music that Planetshakers generate; youth appealing, new age, loud and in short – rocky. Many a times do we associate a musician’s “skill” with the kind of music they usually play and in even more instances do we go “Huh that guy plays metal are you sure he knows a thing about jazz?”

True, it is sad that many musicans do not fully make use of their entire technique/skill library into the songs they produce, some merely playing to please while others are too afraid to deviate but we should never look down on other musicians because their music seems “more inferior” than ours.

Even in many cases, musicians tend to overdo things. We levites, songwriters, arrangers etc always look for means and ways to make our music different from the guy next door, we put in every effort to ensure that our music stands out while sometimes, more really is less. Doug mentioned to us 2 weeks ago, “the hardest thing for a musician to play is silence.” I will not digress further into what he said because I simply can’t. You have to interpret that line in your own way.

I’ve been listening to many of Hillsong’s old albums recently, By Your Side, Blessed, You are My World, For This Cause etc and each time I listen to those songs, I am amazed at how the songs are written, how the musicians never fail to deliver the songs to their best potential and how the worship leaders bring about the anoiting and the holy spirit into the congregation. Songs from that era are really one league apart from today’s songs.

Remember the song “Sing of Your Great Love”? I think that song has the simplest and the ‘least amount of words used’ chorus in the history of gospel (and maybe secular) music.

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord…
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord…

4 simple, common and widely used words in our Christian environment but yet those 4 words make such a huge difference in that song. Whenever I listen to it on the bus, I’m really mesmerised by the music occationally I just feel like singing those words out. As Greg said, long bus rides and ministering music make good time to reflect.

For those who have not listened to that song, please do. For those who don’t have it, ask me.

Musicians, work hard. Pianists practice your chords, guitarist work on your scales and licks, bassists get your slaps and foundations right, drummers play tighty and put in appropriate fill-ins because ultimately even if we do not use these skills in every of our song, it is still a form of worship unto God. And as we get better, as we strive to play better and more, our music will get better.

And only when our music gets better, will we seek to play less, because less is more.

You are the Power in Me

I’m gonna run, with fire
the good news of the gospel I will speak…
I’m gonna fly, in the spirit
Soaring over mountains over defeat

Old songs still power la.

P.S. If anyone wants the mp3 to this song, I miraculously have it, considering how old it is.

Why Obama beat Hillary

Unconfirmed sources from the White House claim that the true reason why Obama was chosen over Hillary Clinton to represent the Democratic Party in the 2008 United States Presidential Election was because Bill Clinton refused to be entitled “The First Husband” since never in the history of the United States has a lady been chosen as the president.

Since the dispute over the title of the husband of the president cannot come to a near end, Hillary has called off her presidential run to avoid any mockery of her husband WIlliam Clinton.

Moral of the story?

Support the black people ya’all, black people are cool mate, and after Obama there ain’t gonna be no black people who walk no streets hungy ma nigger.

Of course I came up with this myself.

I seriously don’t understand how some people can be that extra. Seriously, this attitude I really really despise and I mean come on, don’t you have at least a bit of courtesy and respect? Simple things like when you are talking to another person, someone else just blatantly cuts in and ‘steal’ your conversation OR when people just act like as if you are not even there when they mix around (and I don’t mean not saying Hi); its really damn fricking rude and disregarding to my status as ‘human’, let alone Child of God.

I do not need you people to survive you know, I can live on my own. I am just acting as I am now, my usual self, because I cherish the fact that I have a good character BUT seriously, I don’t need shits to survive alright.

AND I’ll stop feeding your ego from now on since its already so damn huge.

Call this emo? I leave it up to you.

But call that a family, are you sure?

SPA(stic)

Its 11:46pm and I’m waiting for CSI NY to load when I have Chemistry A level SPA exam tomorrow. I’m so screwed. Anyway its the LAST SPA exam in my whole life!!!!!!!!!!! Its quite cool when you are in the twilight stages of your education, because you can go around saying: oh this is the last of Social Studies my eyes will see or NO MORE CHINESE IN 1000000000000000 YEARS!!!!!!

My school weeks ends TOMORROW!!!!!!!! Wheeeeee. Thursday is Labour Day while Friday is my NS checkup so I get to miss school (please praise my IQ level for selecting such a strategic day) so in total I get 4 days off from Meridian Frigging Junior College.

Some really really desperate guy wants to buy my tubescreamer for like $400? I mean yes these pedals do go for that price since the one I have is a non-reissue (made in 1981 to be exact, the very FIRST batch) and is considered ‘vintage’ but seriously… never have I seen someone so desperate as to offer me $400 straight. He even offered me guitars to trade for it. GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) is really such a rampant problem. Thankfully I stopped buying and selling stuff already, found what I need and like to use. Now that I’m done with pedals, I’ll start on my guitar collection :)

Library Week!!

When that eccentric guy from MJC Library CCA made his announcement at morning assembly, I did not really pay attention, let alone bother about the details. However, I realised to my delight that this week’s Library Week @ MJC allowed us to borrow UP TO 14 MATERIALS AT ONCE!!! $200 worth of music is now in my computer for free :)

I’ve got Queen, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jimi Hendrix, Coldplay, Keane, Bob Marley, Led Zepplin, U2, The Beatles, Pink Flyod and a compilation. Please swoon at my good music taste now.
